HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD DAY

On Saturday, November 19th, a very chilly morning,  most of the KIDSPACE staff and some of their friends and family showed up at the Clark County Habitat for Humanity build site to volunteer their labor.

 This house will soon be the new home of one of the KIDSPACE families.

One of the first things the site supervisor told us was, "I hope you're not afraid of heights.  There is lots of ladder and roof work today!"

There was also lots of construction garbage and recycling to be sorted and hauled away.

There was caulking to be done . . . everywhere that the siding met wood.

The #1 PRIORITY was finishing up the siding.  Mark and James took on that task.  They are far better with tape measures, table saws and siding than the rest of us!

 

And finally, there was lots of windows that needed cleaning inside and out.

 The prank of the day:  the lady window washers stranded Mr. Antonio up on the roof while he was cleaning a skylight.

The KIDSPACE volunteers are strong and efficient workers.  They made very short work of all the tasks to be done.  We had 8 hours of work done in less than four hours.  We found ourselves out of work.  Our day was done! 

So, 11 out of our 17 volunteers ended our day at Izzy's for a hearty and warm lunch.

The tab was on the bosses - of course!

Miss Crystal and Miss Julie asked each child what they were thankful for...

The children got to pick out a colorful feather to add to they Tom Turkey.

Each feather had the children's words on them.

The Many Hats of Mat Man

MAT MAN RETURNS

After reading a book about Mat Man and his hats, the children made their own Mat Man.

Then they imagined what Mat Man was doing or where he was going while wearing a variety of different hats.

 

 

 

 

Mat Man likes vacations and that's what he did while he was wearing the white hat.

When Mat Man wears a wool cap,  he's in college studying really, really hard.

When Mat Man was wearing a crown, he was a king living in
a palace and sitting on a chair.

And, when Mat Mat was wearing a cap, he was
 in a parade marching down the street.

"T" is for Turkey

Miss Kathy and Miss Sharon brought a box to circle and told us there was a surprise inside.  They gave us four clues.

1. He is very scared because Thanksgiving is close.
2. He is very colorful.
3. We saw his family at the Pumpkin Patch.
4. He has two legs.

We had many ideas.  We guessed a chicken, a car, a dragon and many other guesses.  Each time they opened the box and asked, "Are you a chicken?"  "Are you a car?" "Are you a dragon?" And each time their friend inside said, "no!"

Miss Kathy and Miss Sharon gave us two more clues.

1. He has lots of feathers.
2. We each made two of them today with our hands.

Then we raised our hands and said, "turkey!"  Miss Kathy opened the lid.  We were right!!

We also were introduced to the letter "T" and guess what . . . turkey begins with the letter "T."

We practiced making the "T" sound and making the sign for "T."

Do you know how to write a "T?" 

We do! We practiced today!

We ALWAYS start the letter "T" at the top and we draw a straight line down.

Next, we begin on the left and draw a line across the top.

It was a "T" riffic day!

An afternoon puppet show...

We made our very own "Hey Diddle, Diddle" books...

We introduced letter tracing in salt trays...

At circle time each child was given a letter puzzle piece and then asked to find the corresponding letter on the ABC carpet. We then took turns arranging our puzzle pieces in the board...

What started out as a simple marble trap soon became a huge group effort. It was great to see so many kiddos working together and the end end result was amazing!

We used the styrofoam packing peanuts to paint. The Robins really enjoyed discovering the colors they could make by mixing paint together and soon abandoned the styrofoam for their fingers. Getting messy is SO much fun!

Outside a few robins collected fall leaves and made beautiful bouquets...

At the beginning of the year, Miss dawn brought in a huge caterpillar that formed a chrysalis but never  emerged. We were all curious as to what we would find inside. The children were enthralled as they watched Miss Dawn carefully open the chrysalis...

Mat Man Shapes



Mat Man is an important concept in our drawing and writing curriculum.  
After reading the book, Mat Man Shapes, the children were encouraged to make their own Mat Man.

 

The story told us . . . 

. . . that if we made Mat Man with a star, he would make our
wish come true.   One special wish - just for you.

. . . that if we made Mat Man with an oval, he'd sit with Humpty on the wall
then hold him so he wouldn't fall.

 . . . and if we made Mat Man with a moon, He'd go outside and tell the cow
"Ready! Set! jump over me now!"
