Robins - April 16th - 20th

Here's what the Robins have been up to this week...Take a look!

Dramatic play is such an important part of early childhood development. It encourages problem solving, cooperation, self-expression, language use, and much much more. This week the Robins were really into the new costumes in the dramatic play area. We saw princesses, dinosaurs, Moms, Dads, & firefighters.

This week we tried to paint using oil & watercolors...

 Number puzzles...

Fun with paper airplanes...

The letter of the week was T!

After we learned the sign for T & turle, we made turtles in the sand using seashells.

We also discovered we could use our fingers to write other things in the sand, like our names!

And of course, sand is SO fun to play with!

Our cooking project this week consisted of tater tots, tomatoes, & Trix. Yum!

This week we studied seeds and are been trying to grow some of our own. After reading Eric Carle's, The Tiny Seed, we discussed the different parts of a flower and what plants need to grow.

We examined the similarities and differences between different types of seeds...

We also started growing lima bean seeds. Each child wrapped a few seeds in a wet paper towel and hung them in the window to get some sun. Can a seed sprout without soil? How long will it take? Stay tuned to find out...

Thanks for reading!

Solar System

A Solar System Project
Can you name the order of the planets?
Ask any Robin and they can tell you.

Putting together a solar system is really hard work.  First, you must cut out the sun and all nine planets.
Then glue each planet in order and add the names.

This project gave the children lots of cutting practice, endurance, memorization, a glimpse into outer space and most of all good endurance to finish a long, hard projects.

It is fun to practice coloring skills on "all things outer space."

Space the final frontier.

Max and Pacino worked hard on our "S" word space mural.
Can you name all the "S" words that are in Space?
Look for the mural in the middle room.

The children had lots of fun, learned much and worked hard just like the NASA astronauts do.  Congratulations Robins!

Robins - April 9th - 13th

Hello again! This week we enjoyed being back together again after Spring Break and we jumped back into the alphabet.

The letter of the week was "S"! We're getting so close to finishing the alphabet. The Robins have started counting down the remaining letters...only 7 more to go!

In honor of the letter "S," we used salad spinners to make spin art. This was a huge hit! Every Robin participated and each piece of art was unique. The process was tons of fun and the act of spinning took some practice and a lot of muscle control.

This week we talked a lot about our Solar System. The Robins class enjoyed reading a variety of nonfiction books on things like comets, stars, & planets. We even had a chance to try space food (freeze dried fruit and Tang)!

Space sensory tub...

Cooperation at it's finest! Here a group of children work together to assemble a solar system puzzle.

We finished the week with an alphabet cooking project. The Robins made spaghetti and Miss Julie even brought a surprise side dish...SEAWEED SALAD! It never ceases to amaze me, how brave many of the kiddos are when it comes to trying new things...

Thanks for reading! Until next week,

Bluebirds February 2012

The Bluebirds have had an exciting February learning about the letter H. We have met Henrietta Hippo and created fun purple puppets that look just like her.

We have been singing the song "Hannah Has the Hiccups" to practice the letter H sound.

Since interest in sharks has been such an exciting topic, it has become this week's theme.  We have painted the ocean for our friends- the color sharks! Ms Ginger told a fun story to introduce the sharks to everyone earlier this week.

Many of the children have become very skilled at assembling the magnetic toys into amazing creations!

Bluebirds March 22, 2012

Here's a little peek at some of the favorite activities this week in the Bluebird class.

The Bluebirds have been very creative with their use of the magnet blocks!

Wow! Look at the team work between these boys as they construct
towers and prepare to knock them over by throwing a ball.

We had a great time making a giant spider web.  We were practicing group co-operative skills.  Look what we can do when we all work together!

During art the children had an opportunity to create a shark out of paper.  They was so much interest we put together a little underwater center with books and ocean animals.  It has been a very popular center to visit during tub time.

The magnet blocks are popular with the boys and girls because they are so easy and fun to build with.  The children are extremely creative and find that building is not only fun, but also can be a bit challenging.  Children are experimenting daily with design, structure and the properties of physics and magnets.

Here, the child learned how to build a collapse-proof tower!

Drawing sharks is a great way to practice using circles and triangles.

Painting with marbles...

The new mats are very popular.

                                                              Sunny days were a treat!

Our weekly walk to gymnastics.

Last Friday, we followed the leprechaun's trail and found gold!

rainbow

"R" is for RAINBOW!

Take a look at the rainbows the children created by stacking paper from largest to smallest.

Thank you parents for your fruit contributions.  After laminating our paper rainbow we covered them with fruit.

Notice that we even practiced writing the word rainbow.

Purple grapes, blue blueberries, green grapes, yellow pineapple, orange oranges and red strawberries made a beautiful, colorful and tasty treat.

We learned about the colors of the rainbow, size sequencing and we gave our taste buds a treat!
Thanks to everyone for helping with this project.
