Hello again! Here are some of the highlights from last week in the Robins' class...
We had so much fun learning about the letter "A" we continued with it this week. We also incorporated a study of apples...
Fishing for "A"s and apples using magnets and paperclips...
We put on or scientists caps to make predictions about which apple would be heavier (wood, plastic, or real). The kids really enjoyed this and continued to weigh other items around our room.

We accidentally spilled a bucket of buttons in our sand box this week, but a treasure hunt/counting game made cleaning up a snap!
This week we introduced some new wood pieces that are part of our new language and literacy curriculum. We put them out for children to explore freely and were so excited when the children discovered on their own that these shapes could form letters. Woohoo!
The Robins love completing the obstacle courses Mr. Antonio builds on our gym...
The Robins are starting to get pretty excited for Halloween!
We've started counting down the days in our morning meeting. A great way to introduce counting and other mathematical concepts...
Some Robins were inspired by this Halloween pattern and chose to experiment with patterns themselves...

apple trees....
TEN APPLES Ten apples grow on a tree five for you and five for me let us shake the tree just so and then the apples will fall below. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 |
The Robin's class made their own ten apples in a tree to go along with the poem. They practice reciting the poem and counting the apples. |
These trees were sent home with each child that made one. Ask your child to recite the poem and count the apples with them. But, remember.... only five apples for you and five for me.

Helping Hands
There are just some things you don't have to "teach." One of the girls wore tights last week and had a hard time climbing the hill in the gym. Rather than interfering, we let the children use their creativity and desire to help each other solve the problem.
Many friends tried to help, but these two used a human chain to pull their friend to the top. The whole trial and error process was handled with giggles, encouraging words, and ideas from the rest of the Blue Birds. The previous week we talked a lot about how the Blue Birds are like a family - we love each other and take care of each other. Nicely done, ladies!!
TOUCHY FEELY
For one of our science explorations this week, the Blue Birds grew Orbs. After they had grown to marble size, we then added some pumpkins to the mix.
The Blue Birds were enthralled with the differences in textures, weight, and color. We talked about how scientists use observation to solve problems and how the orbs feel, smell, look, and sound.
Blue Birds used the following words to describe the orbs: slimy, squishy, soft, slippery, big, small, medium, runny, biggest, beautiful, and eewwww. So glad you had a great time Blue Birds!

CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM!
Learning the letters of the alphabet can be sooooo much fun.
We read the story Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom written by Bill Martin, Jr., a classic story about the letters of the alphabet climbing up a coconut tree and then trying to not fall down . . . but of course they do!
After reading the story the kido's each colored in their own coconut tree and then used alphabet stamps to place letters in and around the coconut tree.

Robins - October 3rd-7th
This last week was SO exciting! First day of gymnastics & the introduction of alphabet curriculum. Here are some of the highlights...

We hid the letter A in the watercolor paintings by writing on them beforehand with white crayon. The kids loved watching the letter of the week magically appear in their art!

Robins - September 26th-30th
Here are some of the highlights from this last week in the Robins' class.
Nature's sensory tables - rain water, dirt, and mud. These Robins really enjoyed using the mixture to paint the play structures.
Painting...
Dramatic play in our Farmer's Market...
We used magazines to make collages...what a great way to be creative and practice our scissor skills!
Group art using markers, paint daubers, and hole punches.
Gym time has quickly become one of our favorite parts of the school day.We love to move!
We also like read quietly sometimes. This cozy corner is a great place for children to sit down with their favorite books.
Alphabet stencils created a buzz of excitement for upcoming ABC curriculum.
A beautiful day to spend some time in the field across the street. The children loved rolling down the hill and playing ball. Lots of practice during the month of September has definitely paid off. The Robins are great at walking in line and crossing the street safely!
Floam (Noun): a compound composed of "microbeads" in a foam-like substance. Fun stuff!
More Fall leaf projects...look for these around our classroom!
