Robins - January 23rd-27th

This week was all about the letter "I" and snowmen. Take a look at all the fun we've been having...

Making the letter of the week with wood pieces...

At circle time we used both chalkboards and white boards to prcatice writing "I" and making circles.

The Robins love to practice writing!

We took turns building a snowman. We talked about size and sequencing as we placed small, medium, and large circles to form the body of our snowman.

Later in the week we used marshmallows & toothpicks to build snowmen...

We used dark construction paper, white crayons, and an epsom salt and water mixture to create snow scene artwork...

We also experimented with mixing our own paints by adding different colors to white tempura paint. The Robins are so creative! Some enjoyed just mixing the colors, some painted snowmen, and some even incorporated the mixing tools into their art.

We tried to build a snowman out of spheres of ice, but it didn't work out like we expected. So we decided to make ice sculptures instead using water colors and salt. The kids enjoyed guessing how long the ice would take to melt away...

We also filled our sensory tub with different shaped pasta and some colorful beads!

We try to get outside every day, but sometimes it's just too cold & wet. We make the best of it by getting creative indoors and taking time to still get in some exercise.

Building forts...

Doing yoga with Miss Julie...

After a few days of rainy weather, Mr. Sun came out to play & the Robins enjoyed every minute of it.

The kids used a tricycle to create a chalk grinding factory...

While some used sidewalk chalk to decorate...

We made soccer goals...

And went digging for buried treasure...

Until next week,

The Snowman Poem

What happens when you mix, white paint, glue, glitter and and give the students a
variety of round objects with which to print?

SNOWMEN!
The children discoveredt they could make different sizes of snowmen and that no
two snowmen were the same.

Add a red scarf and a black hat and you have .... a snowman!

The Snowman Poem
I am a little snowman.
I am so fat and round.
I started from a snowflake,
that fell upon the ground
I have two buttons for my eyes.
A great big scarf of red.
I have a carrot for a nose,
A hat upon my head.

gingerbread math

Gingerbread men helped the children practice their number recognition skills and their counting skills.   First they paired the gingerbread men with dots and those with numerals.
The children then unfix cubes and buttons
to match the number on the gingerbread men.
As a follow-up, the children created their own gingerbread man and then chose a number between 1 and 10.  Their task was to count out and glue on the number of buttons that matched their numeral.
It was a great project to reinforce their one to one counting skills.
Nice work by everyone in the Robin's class.
You can check out all the gingerbread men with their
buttons on the bulletin board in the middle room at Kidspace.

Robins - January 17th - 20th

Here are some of the highlights from the Robins' class this week...

On Tuesday, we were so excited to see snow. Miss Julie even led some of the children in a "sticking dance" to try and get the snow to accumulate. It must have worked because Wednesday was a snow day! When the children came back, they couldn't wait to share their stories of snowmen and snowball fights with their families...

The children enjoyed last week's gingerbread activities so much, we decided to keep it going. We made a gingerbread "mat man".

We talked about perimeter and then used dried cranberries to measure the perimeter of gingerbread cut outs.

We talked about all the different versions of the story of the Gingerbread Man we had read. The children summarized each book and we discussed similarities and differences. Next, the children voted on their favorite and made a graph.

Uppercase & lowercase matching...

We love making patterns!

Collecting pictures from magazines and creating collages is one of our favorite afternoon activities...

The letter of the week is "H"! We practiced making the letter H out of wood pieces and writing the letter on magnetic tablets and in sensory trays.

The Robins had so much fun with the letter writing trays filled with salt and flour, we created giant sensory trays filled with flour, sugar, and rock salt.

We painted a giant "H"...

On Friday, the middle room was transformed into the game room. The Robins took turns playing different games like chutes and ladders, memory, and alphabet soup...

Robins - January 9th -13th

Happy New Year! The Robins are glad to be back and we're finally back in the swing of things. Here is a look at what we've been up to...

Pattern boards & rubber shapes make geometry fun...

Even snack time can be an opporunity for learning...alphabet bingo!

The letter of the week was "G"!

Fun with magnets...

The Robin's class is full of sensory experiences...

Scented playdough...(we added cinnamon)...

Cornstarch & water...

Water...

Insta-snow!

Gingerbread! Gingerbread! Gingerbread!

We've spent the last few days reading many versions of the classic gingerbread tale. The Robins have also enjoyed retelling their favorite versions & making up their own gingerbread stories.

Painting gingerbread...

Gingerbread math....sorting by size & color. The Robins starting sorting all sorts of things, even carpet squares!

One day we decorated a giant gingerbread man. When we went to pull him out of the oven, he was gone! We had to follow a trail of crumbs to find him out on the playground!

Today, each kiddo got to make their own gingerbread man. The Robins examined some ginger root and decided it didn't smell nearly as good as gingerbread cookies. Next, we rolled out the dough, cut out the shapes, and put the cookies in the oven. Later that day we decorated our cookies and ate them! We even made a graph to show whcih part of the cookie the kids ate first...
